How to reformat a DVR drive for use on a computer?

How do you reformat a Western Digital Hard Drive that was from a DVR for computer use?

  • I recently took out a 320g Western Digital Hard Drive out of a DVR. As far as I know, it was never used, but there was apparently something wrong with the power supply so it was just left alone. The hard drive was pulled out of a HR20i - 100 HDDVR receiver. My overall goal with this is to use it for computer storage. When I first boot my computer, the screen that shows what drives are plugged into my computer says that one drive, which is most likely my OS drive, is H.D.D Compatibility Enabled while the second one (the DVR hard drive) says H.D.D Compatibility None. I have looked around on how to reformat this but the threads usually end without a solution or I just do not fully understand what to do to get this to work. I am currently running Windows 7 if that helps any. If I could get help on this it would be well appreciated. Thank you.

  • Answer:

In Windows 7, you need to go to "Disk Management" and see if the drive is listed. If it is, then right click on the drive and select "format". Once formatted, you can use the drive. "EDIT: The Hard Drive was not detected in Disk Management. " - Then you've got a bad hard drive.
