How does a longboard turn?

I bought my first longboard recently and was unhappy to discover that if i turned too sharply, the board would hit the wheel and stop instantaneously, causing me to have multiple near death experiences. I decided to fix it. I cut some big wedges out of the board so that the wheels would not touch it anymore. Problem: Now it won't turn... Is there any way I can fix this? The shape of the longboard was sort of a teardrop if you will. The sharpness of turning is all in the trucks. Loosen the trucks (kingpin) and the turns are sharper. Tighten them and the turns aren't as sharp. Ifthe wheels bite the board then tighten the trucks. You will need a wrench. That's it.
