Why do we use the symbol (<3) for a heart if it looks nothing like an actual heart?

Why do we use this: <3 symbol for a heart if it looks nothing like the hearts in our bodies? I've always used that symbol, but I've never understood why we use it.

i think its easier to draw that way and the <3 looks like a stereotypical heart sideways !
