There are a plethora of reasons. Pinched nerves, slipped disks and even scoliosis can result in pain during lying down. Occasionally even gas can result in a sharp back pain. Certain things that you would have to look at is the angle you're lying down, your posture, your age, if you keep yourself hydrated and so forth. If it happens often enough it's best to consult your doctor.
