  • Answer:

To become a high school science teacher (like I am doing!) you must major in the science(s) you want to teach, and you minor (or have a concentration) in secondary education. For example, I am double-majoring in Earth Sciences--Geology, and Biology and minoring in secondary education. It means I take normal science stuff like Geology, Oceanography, Anatomy/Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Genetics, Astronomy, etc ... as well as Education stuff, such as Classroom Management and Science Methods (which is learning how to actually teach science to students, make lesson plans, lab supervision & safety etc). [Same goes for math; you major in Mathematics and minor or concentrate in secondary education] Tests: First, to be admitted to most Education programs in college, you take the Praxis I, which is a test that assesses your reading, writing, and math as a basic level. If your SAT scores are strong enough, you can skip that. Second, you just study your major and minor content. Be sure to volunteer with children, and get involved with your content (so if you want to teach Chemistry, you would be wise to get involved with research with a chemistry professor). Then you take a Praxis II test, which tests you on your content (if you teach Mathematics, it will test you on math concepts, problems, etc). If you pass... ... You go on to Student Teaching, which is the last step before you graduate. You'll be the teacher in a science or math classroom in a high school for 10 to 16 weeks, full-time, getting total exposure to what it will be like. You work just as hard or HARDER than other students in your major/subject(s) because you have to have a higher GPA to graduate in order to teach. A Physics major can graduate with a 2.2 GPA and find a job... but if you want to teach Physics, you usually need to have a 2.75 GPA to graduate with the teaching license, and that's a B- average for a hard major!
