Am I eligible to receive any grant from FAFSA?

How do you receive FAFSA/grant/etc money?

  • So I have sent in my SIR (statement of intent to register) Is there anything I need to do? how do I receive the money?

  • Answer:

All federal aid money goes directly to the college. Each semester, half of your total aid package will be used to pay for your tuition and fees. If you have work-study, the college will hold onto that money; you'll get a job on campus and earn your pay each week out of your work-study funds. If there's anything left over after your bill is paid, you'll get a refund for the difference. Most colleges mail out checks, but some will give you a debit card and put your refund money on it. Every college has its own schedule for distributing refunds. I went to a community college that didn't send out checks until six weeks into the semester (that was an awful wait), and then I transferred to a state university that sent out checks the week before classes started. Your school could be anywhere between those two extremes.

Money is paid straight to the school. Students don't actually get the money.
