2. A square television screen has a side length of 10 inches. What is the approximate length of the diagonal of the television screen?

Answer:
The diagonal divides the square into two right angled triangles, and forms the hypotenuse of both triangles. Pythagoras said that the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of each of the other two sides. If each side is 10", the square of each side is 100, the sum of the squares is 100 + 100 = 200, the square of the hypotenuse. So the length of the hypotenuse/ diagonal is the square root of 200. = 14.14" and you would say the TV has a 14" screen.
