Where to live and what to wear (in winter) in Toronto?
-
Hi, my husband and I are are moving to Toronto in January for 1-2 years. I have three questions... 1. Where is a great area to live? We are in our early 30's and love restaurants, being close to transport, and places that are bustling and a bit quirky. We are happy to spend up to $3000/month on an apartment. 2. Where's the best place to find furnished apartments for rent (preferably ones that have amenities included)? 3. What is required for (female) corporate fashion in winter? I have never even SEEN snow (being from Australia) or been in weather less than 0 degrees. I'm assuming I can't just walk around in heels or normal shoes and probably my version of a coat will be no good in Toronto? Can anyone give me some advice? For example do women wear boots in to work and then change? Thanks so much!

Answer:
1. Your $3000 will go a fairly long way. You may want to scout around viewit.ca to get a sense of price. It's very important to find a good neighbourhood. You should definitely be in Toronto proper (not the suburbs), but rich neighbourhoods abut dodgy ones, so read up on the good ones. A few hipster areas: Little Italy, Beaches, Annex (too young for you, likely), Bloor West Village / High Park, West Queen West / Trinity Bellwoods, Danforth (between Don Valley and Pape). Higher end / yuppie areas that are on the subway: Yonge and St. Clair, Yonge and Eglinton, Yonge and Davisville, Yonge and Lawrence. Former hippie enclave now featuring movie stars and ultra-high end shopping: Yorkville. 3. Corporate: wool, wool, wool. As a man working in the financial core, in cold days I don't wear ski jackets or hiking boots. I wear a wool overcoat, conservative hat (toque), leather gloves, and special black leather shoes that are suited to the snow. I strategize to spend the least time in snow; there is an underground city in the financial core, so it's possible. Some areas, like Yonge & Empress, while not that trendy, have condo's attached to the subway, so you can truly avoid snow on weekdays. Outside of work, I usually wear a functional winter coat and hat and my leather gloves, plus rugged low-cut boots. Note: summers are hot in Toronto; 25C most days and up to 40C occasionally. But only for 3 months (mid-June to mid-September)

Answer 1: Live down town Toronto if you want a busy, fun place. Down town is a bit more expensive. I enjoyed living off of St Clair Avenue West. It was busy, yet a nice, generally safe place. And it won't be quite as expensive as down town. Although you will have to take public transit in order to get down town. Public transportation in Toronto is everywhere. Answer 2: I find that the majority of apartments are not furnished. Many of the apartments that are furnished are part of a house, or a whole house that someone is renting out personally. Answer 3: If you will be down town a lot, there is never a huge amount of snow. It's too warm and too many people are there to keep the snow for long. It's mostly just slush. The vast majority of women wear stylish boots while walking around and to work. These boots can have heels, or not. You could get away with a good pair of running shoes, but boots work better. You will need a thick coat- even though there's never a LOT of snow down town, it does get rather cold. A lot of women also wear scarves. Winter clothes are normally worn until middle of March, but it varies every where. Good luck!

I will answer 3 first . Normal business dress keep it comfortable not TOO casual. OUTWEAR whatever you like that keeps you warm. You will find a large selection in a variety of styles but recommend warmth over fashion. Many will wear one type of foot ware for their journey to and from work and change into something more suited for indoors upon arrival. Depends on the weather. For you picture what you wear in a heavy rain storm going to and from where ever not exactly what you wear when you arrive. It gets cold and it also gets hot. Dress in layers if you are not sure of what the weather will be. Having something like a sweater you can add or remove as the weather changes. For winter things like long sleeves and covering the legs can add to your comfort. For your first few days you will be cold if you can hold out a few days the sales will be starting for winter clothes. You can avoid a lot of outdoor travel using the various pedestrian systems that interconnect many buildings in the city centre. Toronto has a good public transit system similar to what you have in Sydney and Melbourne. For your house hunting there are many nice places check out the web sites for places that you are interested in To many variables to answer fairly larger buildings have different features for the renters swimming pools fitness centres or lower level stores and so on that may be something you want. This is factored into the price. Use Google map and take the little man for a walk down the streets of your chosen place to explore the area to see if it is suitable for you. Your budget is reasonable for a good quality place. The city is large so find out first where you are working and factor this into selecting where to live.
