Fly-half or scrum-half? Which should I play?
-
I'm 15, 5 feet tall and 100 pounds, so i'm pretty small, so don't suggest a forward position cuz I don't wanna play there! It's my first year on the high school rugby team, never played before, but my coach seems to think I'm pretty good, and wants to start training me now to play scrum-half so that when I'm in grade 12 I'll be really good at it. I'm a pretty good passer, a good kicker, and one of the best hitters on my team. I've also played soccer hockey and track so I'm pretty fast and in good shape. Right now I play wing and I like it cuz I get to run with the ball and when I do get the ball I just run down the side and only have a couple of defenders in front of me to beat. The only thing is, I don't like playing scrum-half, which is where my coach wants me to play! I want to try fly-half, but he seems to think I should play scrum! Which is more important? Which should I play? and we have a good fly-half which is why I don't get to play there. And I've played inside center and I like it, but I don't like outside center too much...

Answer:
Scrumhalf is one of the most important positions on a rugby field. You are the connection between the forwards and backs which means a good back line is no good if the scrumhalf is no good. If you have a good pass and kick, you will be able to play well at scrumhalf, however in general a scrumhalf will not run the ball much. you have to be able to communicate with the whole team and be able to make decisions and order the forwards when needed. If you think you can do that, a good scrumhalf is key for a teams success, as you grow into the role, you will find you will be able to do more things (such as run and kick more). I would not recommend playing fly half if you already have a good one. Fly halves have to be very knowledgeable about the game and are massive targets for big fat props like me to run at and tackle :P They do not get it easy, especially if you are really small as well. My tip is either stick at Scrummie, as it does take a while to enjoy that position and get used to it, or play wing as they need speed and a good kick. it's up to you. Just make sure you enjoy rugby, the greatest game in the world, no matter what position you are :D

At your height you are perfect for the scrum half position! Just stick to it, at scrum half there are still good opportunities to kick and run with the ball. Its even better that you have a good fly half because a good 9 and 10 are vital for a good team. Watch Morgan Parra, the scrum half who plays for France and Clermont. His usual position in scrum half and is one of the best at it, he does a lot of kicking too and makes some big tackles. He also has to play as fly half for france on the occasion.

honestly, scrumhalf is more important. offensively, its a chain from scrumhalf to flyhalf to the other players on your team. i played flyhalf for the first time on friday, and i now realize how important a good scrumhalf pass is. for your size, play scrumhalf, but keep your running and flyhalf passing skills up. chances are, youll get called for a different position at some point.

I think you should stay on the wing or even center. First try to understand the game and then temporarily take up possible other positions when needed. You said that you are only starting rugby, for a scrumhalf and flyhalf it is vital to be able to read a game and fully understand the game. So in my opinion you have to grow into those positions just like a captain. The best thing is to listen to your coach, they have the bigger picture for the whole team, and what each of you are capable of. After all rugby is a team sport. Hope that helps
