What is it like to be a medicine intern?

Question for medicine students?

  • Ok so I live in nz. I am pretty set on becoming a GP but there is just one problem. In nz to become gp you have to do bachelors of medicine and bachelors of surgeory. I know gp's don't have to do surgeory but while at uni you have to go as an intern in a hospital. The only problem is I don't want to do surgeory on a living person. I'm ok learning bout it but I'm afraid they'll make me do it while an intern. On the website it says an intern in a hospital working in your speciality, does that mean if I'm set on being a gp I don't do surgeory? Any help? P.S. I mean as an intern are you expected to preform surgeory. i do not mean assisting the sugeory, gathering lab results and aiding the surgeons on duty. i am ok with learning how to do surgeory but am asking if it is neccessery to preform on a patient while an intern.

  • Answer:

In my country interns just help during surgeries, but a NVD or an apandectomy or an abcess drainage... I think interns can do it too. There's nothing to be afraid of, you are not alone by yourself! residents are there.
