Can I become a military officer with a BA in Criminal Justice?

  • Hi guys and gals. Im 21 and about to finish a BA in Criminal Justice. I hear from some people that a degree in CJ isn't worth nothing and that I wont be able to enter the military as an officer, but then some people will tell me that most officers dont need a certain degree and that I can get in with a degree in CJ. What is the truth? Could someone please give me a real answer. I dont care what branch of the service it is in, or the job for that matter because im a hard worker at whatever I do! Thanks.

    The type of degree is important if you want to go into the Navy or Air Force as they tend to take technical majors. The Army does not really pay much attention to the type of degree that you have as long as you meet other standards. You still have to take the asvab and score high on it. There used to be additional tests that were required as well. Just because you have the degree, does not mean that you will get a commission. The Marine Corps is not as picky as the Navy or Air Force but there are far fewer officer slots due to the fact that the MC is smaller than the other branches and does not have tons of officer slots. Truth is, it doesnt matter what degree you have, for the most part. That being said, someone with, say, an engineering degree, would be above you on a waiting list.

Ok...you were smart enough to get a BA....but not smart enough to contact an officer recruiter to see what your options are? Good luck...I think you'll need it.
