up to 6 months.... is the internal working guideline but it is all done one on a case by case basis, and work load/priority internally, I am sure the up coming olympics and applications for visit visa's are causing some strain on the system - despite protestations that all is under control ;)

A lot of things come into play. Any skeletons in the applicants application? Such as criminal convictions, or negative immigration history? What country did they apply from? If available, did they go priority or regular processing? Time of year can also play a factor. Such as late summer when people apply for student visa's.
