Detroit Public Schools, Recent Walkout. Whats your opinion?
-
I am a DPS student, and as most people know, Detroit is not the best place to be. I've been a DPS student since 1st grade, (I'm a junior now) and ever since I entered high school, I've noticed what and how the administration for DPS and Detroit has been handling our education with a lack of financial support. On April 25, 2012, students from my school, Western International High School, walked out at 10:55 (3rd Period) out to the park in front of our school to protest the closing of the rival school, Southwestern High (Southwestern students marched from their school to our school at an earlier time the same day) & Maybury Elementary. Though most didn't know Southwestern was already sold to someone or some company, it still marked a significant role in the way the youth is taking a stand for what they believed in. Yesterday, the administration at my school suspended over 160 students in act of truancy, and doing an illegal walkout (which I'm sure the students weren't aware of it, and they organized the walkout themselves) and most that got suspended received 5-10 days. As a witness of the whole scenario, the security guards at our school, for the lack of a better term, 'manhandled' the students that day. (Not just that day, they treat the students like that, and they verbally abuse them when a student gets detained and ready for suspension if they commit bad things) Some students peaked out a door that lead to the front end of the school, and the security caught them and (one particular was a girl), they roughly grabbed their shirts, and PUSHED them outside and said, "If you want to do the walkout, then GO OUTSIDE, don't come back in." Some teachers were for the walkout, and planned to walkout with the students, but they backed ndown at the last minute, claiming they'll lose their jobs, when in reality, all DPS teachers lose their job at the end of the school year, and they have to reapply during the summer. Now, for the bad things that BOTH parties committed. The school&DPS _______________ - Western High Administration suspended more than the legal limit, which is 80 at a time. - Western High Administration & Security gave the students more or less days BASED on how active they were in the walkout. - Security Guards manhandled students with verbal abuse, and nearly ALL students don't fight back (And this is how the admin were acting throughout the whole year) - Western Administration would suspend students at the third time they were late to school (7:30am) and a fine of $500, for 1-5 days. - All security guards would handcuff students who were in trouble, regardless if it was being late, or being in a fight. - Security Guards would verbally abuse students and physically push them down, or do so of that nature. - Administration recently suspended a few students on April 5, for doing an 'illegal facebook page' and they created offensive memes, and they are still suspended, classifying it as a C16 offense. - Administration 'forgot' we weren't supplied with adaquate books for the AP classes, & the general classes. (The admin were just told this now so late in the year) - Administration doesn't tell us the real reason behind the so many tests we take. For example, the MME (Michigan Merit Examination) is taken to all 11th graders, and this year, if the scores were low, this school would become charter. They didn't tell us, they just motivated us; which I think, if they told us, it would of given us a real reason to work hard. What the students did wrong during the walkout ______________________________________… -- The walkout was illegal, or any form of walkout is illegal. -- They were completely unorganized, but managed to make a statement. -- (Not sure on this) But you need permission for a protest, right? Pemit -- They skipped school -- The students thought they weren't going to get in trouble for the walkout if it were a big group Right now, the students that got suspended at my school, (I'm not sure of the SW kids), they are going to the park in front of our school (and the main office can see the park) every suspension day, and they have lesson plans. They're making a statement that just because they got suspended, it still entitles them to learn things the school's not doing. I'm sure this is the start of something, that the youth are taking action since the administration in downtown Detroit isn't doing much. I have given you all the facts I know, and I would like to know what your opinion is in this scenario. What do you think will happen? Do you have any advice to give to the youth, to make a difference in their own education?
