What is a substitute for shellac?

HELP!!! Is the shellac/denatured alcohol going to hurt me?

  • After I had opened up a drawer in my bathroom, I accidentally hit the inside "wall" of the drawer with my nail really hard, and I saw a little scratch on it. I know that liquid shellac, which was what had been used to coat the inside of the drawer, contains large amounts of denatured alcohol (which is toxic). I also know that denatured alcohol evaporates very quickly when it is exposed to air. I was wondering if I could get harmed because I punctured the shellac coating, touching the denatured alcohol that had not before been exposed to the air nor evaporated. Right after this had happened, I washed my hands to get the shellac/denatured alcohol off of them, and then I shut the drawer. I then went to bed. The next morning, this morning, I was afraid that the denatured alcohol inside the closed drawer could contaminate the tampons, pads, spare toothbrushes, floss, contacts, et cetera that was also inside of that same closed drawer. I opened that drawer and I also opened the door of that bathroom to try to air things out. I am still afraid that everything in that drawer, that is still in that drawer, will not completely air out. I am also still afraid to go upstairs to that same bathroom becauseI do not want to be exposed to the air in there that smells like shellac/denatured alcohol. Will everything completely air out? If so, how long? When will it stop smelling like shellac/denatured alcohol? I am sorry that this is so long. PLEASE read the whole thing. Please give truthful answers. Thank you.

  • Answer:

You're probably going to be fine. But I have to wonder about a bathroom that smells thoroughly like shellac. That's a fire hazard. And yeah, if it's that heavily coated in shellac, I'd put liner paper in the drawers and maybe think about putting your tampons in the linen closet or something.
