When to apply for the Gates Millenium Scholarship?

Gates Millenium Scholarship?

  • Okay, so one of my classmates just received this scholarship. She is incredibly smart (academically, I guess), and has gotten into multiple ivy leagues. But she obviously is financially challenged if she had to apply for this scholarship (and the results were successful so good for her!) However as I was happy for her, I had no idea what this scholarship was. If my information is correct, this scholarship grants you whatever you need (monetarily speaking) for all 4 years of whichever college you choose. I'm not one for math (like at all), but I decided to calculate this up to see if he can afford it (which I was sure he could, seeing as he is worth over 50 billion dollars), but still. When it comes to college tuitions, I guessed these scholarship recipients would most likely be attending schools either at ivy league levels, or slightly below, as they have received this prestigious scholarship in the first place. So I am guessing the average tuition of their college of choice would be about 40,000$, right? Whatever. I calculated it so I'm going with it! So I did 1,000 (kids) multiplied by 40,000 (dollars of tuition it costs) multiplied by 4 (years of college) and then I got this number: 160,000,000$. That's 160,000,000 MILLION DOLLARS! But then I thought... What about their other college needs? Computers, books, and also what if they attend for more than 4 years? That would raise the average tuition for this scholarship recipient to about let's say 55,000$, right? 15,000$ more dollars for books & such? I got 220,000,000$. Great. Someone verify that whatever I'm saying is right or wrong.

  • Answer:

Mind Boggling, isn't it? But it doesn't all come directly out of Mr. Gates' pocket. Usually large scholarships like this are funded from the proceeds of investments, so they are self sustaining. Granted, it was a very BIG initial investment, but from a guy who thinks in terms of curing malaria in Africa, it's probabaly a pretty modest effort.

Get accepted yourself into a school and don't count his money.... Many IVY league schools have many scholarships, you can call that department or go to the school directly and ask... you may have to make an appointment. Best of luck, Alex
