What are the differences between people who have dyslexia, and people who have a hard time writing papers?

What are the differences between dyslexic people and people who are bad at writing papers?

  • I have a friend who is dyslexic(he can barely read, write and spell, but is good at math, physics and chemistry) and he wants to go into engineering, but engineering has a lot of papers that engineers need to write, what are the chances of dyslexic people in engineering schools as well as in the engineering field in general. I am also worried that for him being an engineer, he needs to be able to write tech papers in his job. Will his disability affect his chances of being in engineering school as well as being an engineer? Also, what are the differences between dyslexic people and people who don't know how to write papers? I remember that some of the people in yahoo answers explain that dyslexia is different than people who are horrible at writing essays. What are the differences between dyslexia and people who can't write papers for their life(in other words, people who are bad at writing papers). Better yet, how do teachers tell if students have dyslexia?

  • Answer:

Maybe the difference is that dyslexic people are more thoughtful, creative, etc. Most can read and write, but just have difficaulty with it and requires a lot more concentration and effort. The fact that he is good at these subjects, he might do fine on the practical side. But with his writing, he may be eligible for an ILP or a 1.1 tutor. I'm dyslexic myself and it's very difficault just taking notes. Reading large paragraphs, etc and I can't even write. But throughout the years I have somhow managed to get straight A's in subject, do really good on the practical side which boosts my marks up. It's possible to do well in a subject even if you do bad with the writing aspect. I'm doing Architecture now at University and get a lot of help with essays and stuff. The difference between a dyslexic and a person is that is just a bad writer. Bad writers might write better and read better then a dyslexic. But may have less knowledge and thought when it comes to actual subject. I know some people who were brilliant writers, but didn't have the patience or knowledge with the subject, and so dropped out instead of trying.
