What would be the perfect graduation project for interior design major?

How challenging will it be to both apply and get accepted into the Rhode Island School Of Design?( RISD)?

  • I'm currently a rising Junior, and I've been interested in RISd since my friend recommended it to me last summer. I visited it, and although I believed I was too young to take a tour, I actually enjoyed the environment and food very much. I'm currently doing a project on the benefits of non-traditional colleges( Meaning schools that focus around experiential education and experimental education.) and after reading several different pages about what people believe and felt about RISD, I'm curios about several things. I'm interested in how challenging applications would be if I intend to complete an ,"early decision application," and how challenging the application is. I'll probably take the SAts next year, so I'm also wondering what good tips are and what I should focus on getting around to get accepted( Minimum score at least) Another concept is what the experience was like there for those who've graduated, or are currently attending. I never did take a tour, and I'm interested in how hard and," unique," the experience is. I'm currently attending an private, independent, and non-profit school in the DC area, that focuses on environmental sciences and art. I can't always be motivated enough to complete my assignments early, and I'm aware that it will be much different in college. I couldn't properly function and complete my work while attending public school, so I'm wondering how," intense," it might be for a person like me. I'm interested in pursuing Graphic Design, and maybe Architecture, and I've searched and read their website several times, but could someone also explain to me if its possible to pursue two majors within the same years?( I'm aware I can get a Masters degree if I return after graduation, but I'm thinking about attending a school that can help me with my dream to discover more about education, and possibly help me become a better educator if I ever wish to become a teacher instead.) I'm clearly interested in much more, like the Brown and RISD Dual Degree program( I don't think I'll be able to apply to Brown for that, seeing as I'm already intimidated by everyone's comments on applying to RISD) I also heard that Rhode Island's unemployment rate is high? Should I be worried about that, because I'm currently saving up for college and my future in case I ever run into financial issues, such as debt or unexpected payments. I have a lot more to ask, but for now could you all please help me out with this. I'll ask anything else I need to know if it comes to me in the future. Thanks for helping out!

  • Answer:

RISD is the toughest art school to get into, as it is ranked as the number one art school nationwide. I think there's unemployment everywhere. Especially in Rhode Island, because the state declared bankruptcy. As for graphic design and motion graphics type of job, California is best for that! Los Angeles has so much graphic design opportunities, in fact, as I was searching for internships online, most companies were based here in LA than in Texas or Rhode Island and what not. It's also because of the demand for graphic designers, I mean, the film industry/Hollywood is here in CA. You should try CalArts, Art Center, or Otis and see if you can get a job here in LA. That's my two cents for you.

Other answers

RISD is an art school and students there study art intensively, whatever their art is -- drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, fashion design, etc. Some people are turned off by how intense it can be, because for them art is really a hobby, not a career. If you feel you can trive in such a situation, then by all means go for it.
