What do I have to do to get into Brown University?

What should I pick as my university degree? What I enjoy, or what will get me a job?

  • Hey guys, I've gotten some pretty good GCSE results and I've been predicted some good AS results as well, and some time soon I'm planning on choosing what to study at university. My mom's side of the family are saying I should do law as that is what will get me a job, but everyone from my school and my dad's side of the family are all saying that I should study what I want to do. I've always been interested in film making having made a few machinimas and I'm in the process of writing two screenplays, and I recently attended a Saturday Film School in central London. But I'm honestly a bit torn... I completely understand why my mom's side are saying law. I didn't do media studies so that won't look great on my personal statement (saying I want to study films yet specifically avoiding to take media studies at AS), plus there isn't really a solid job you can get with film and television studies. But at the same time my teachers are saying that your degree is more a measure of your standard of education than anything else, and we had some law firms in saying that some of their interns didn't even take law as their university degree. I don't mind law, just I have absolutely no interest in it at all and I never have... So what should I *really* choose? What's the *truth*? Will picking a degree like law definitely get me a job? Or should I pick a degree like film and television studies that I genuinely enjoy?

  • Answer:

You don't need a degree to be a screenwriter. In fact, if you get one, people will point and laugh. All you need to be a screenwriter is a thick skin, an imagination, and the inability to take "no" for an answer. Get a degree in something you can sell (that means a REAL degree - no some idiotic "20th Century Womens Poetry" degree).
