Business degree/jobs questions?

  • Hello, I am extremely confused on what major to choose in college, but have recently considered business. I have several questions about this major and the jobs that may come from it for anyone who is/was a Business admin (any other business also welcome to answer) major. 1. I know business administration is an extremely popular major. Does this mean that getting a job is hard because of the competition for them? Is there actually competition, or are there enough jobs for the amount of business graduates? 2. I have heard several things about the salary. I am sure that it ranges widely, but have heard some say that going into business makes you money, and some that say the salaries for business majors are not too good. Anyone want to take a stance on that and let me know who is right, if not both? 3. I have no desire to live in a large city when growing up. I know that major companies are associated with major cities, and realize that if I do end up living in the suburbs of Chicago, I can commute to the city, but are there a good number of jobs that I can have in suburban areas as well? If not, are there any other majors (associated with general business) that would allow me to do so? 4. What are examples of jobs that I can get with a business degree? 5. This question may sound obvious and stupid, but hear me out. If you go to a better school and graduate with a better GPA, will that make you more marketable for a better job? Though I realize this is sort of a dumb question, I know that some jobs are simply looking for the degree and not how well you did on track for the degree. 6. I realize that in the real world, I will be working a lot to keep up with a salary that I desire. I also realize that hours/vacation time/working from home/etc. often depend on the company. However, in general, do those working in the field of business work a lot? Is a 40 hour work week pretty standard? Can you work from home often, or at all? Thank you for any answers, and I hope that business is the right major for me!

  • Answer:

Your question shows that you have already performed considerable research. I commend you for that. I just wanted to answer your question concerning business admin majors. Yes, there are more of these than there are jobs right now. Understand please that when money and cash flow becomes tight in any company, these types are the first to be let go. Company operating costs are constantly going up and the customer base is flat, or even decreasing for some. I manage HR, I see this stuff everyday. Types of business jobs? - business accounting majors tend to get placed into purchasing, cost analysts, and buyer positions. Business admin majors tend to become "general office" and administrative assistants. If a college grad has a GPA lower than 2, it raises a flag with me. I do know that some companies prefer the highest GPA but not always a big deal with most companies. Yes, the business office people tend to work straight 40 hours a week jobs. The overtime is usually worked by the engineers and technicians. Hope this helps.
