Have you been demoted from your position at your current job?

Am I considered a job hopper?

  • I have had 3 jobs since May 2008, when I graduated college. Not counting the countless internships I did and work study I did during college. This is kind of how my resume reads: Senior Buyer (2011-2012 - 1 year) Buyer/Planner (2010-2011 - 1 year, 3 months) Marketing Assistant (2008-2010 - 1 year, 11 months) The marketing assistant job was working basically for my family. It's my aunt's company. I interned a lot in marketing during college and when I moved back home, the recession hit and I could not find a job that paid a living wage so I went to work with my aunt. It was great, I got to really contribute and help build her business a lot. After I met my fiance and moved to LA and went to work in apparel for a very large company. I was loving my job but unfortunately my fiance was transferred to Atlanta. I found a new position as a Senior Buyer in apparel in a mid-size company (100 employees). For 6 months, everything was going very well, until internal changes started having a ripple effect. In the next six months, I saw 10 people quit or get laid off in my department of 6. Constant turnover to the point where I am now the second most senior person in the department. My job description changed so much that it was definitely not what I had originally interviewed for or wanted to pursue. I'm miserable with this company and I have spoken to the head of the company (my old boss and the boss after her have all quit so I have to report directly to the CEO). Now I have to train someone to take my job because they want someone that "looks older and more mature" while I get demoted. It's very hurtful when I've stuck around and helped out in all the turmoil. The stress has started to affect my health and relationship. I want to give 2 weeks notice but I am worried I look like a job hopper. I can't stay and apply for jobs because I literally work 13-14 hours a day and am too exhausted so I want to leave to focus on a job hunt. Is it okay to have that many jobs in your 20s? Will new companies look at my 3 previous jobs as job hopping?

  • Answer:

Each job was at least one year. You also moved, so do not worry about what it looks like, you need to quit that job you are in - now. No job is worth your health and relationships. People in this forum will tell you to have a job lined up before you quit, but your circumstances call for a quick exit.

One thing for sure, you're consistent. You never stay at a job for 2 years. I find it very difficult to believe you could write in such detail for a "friend".
