I need help with career direction and a job asap?
-
Here is my situation..I have a house I rent with a friend and I recently got fired from a job I held for 5 years. I live in Clinton twp. Michigan, and not many places are hiring besides Tim Horton's and I am trying to avoid fast food services. I need a job asap. So any info on anyone hiring at the moment? That's my first question. The second question is, I am going to school in the fall for EMT/Paramedic. Because it is only a year of schooling and I need a good job asap. But I hear they don't pay well for the job. So I don't wanna do EMT/Paramedic for over 5 years. For awhile it will do though. What career's could I transfer over to or go to school for with 2 associates degrees in paramedic skills that makes 80k+. I like animals, medical, computers. Opinion's are appreciated!

Answer:
Are you already an EMT? If you're not, it's going to be a year and four to six months if there is no anatomy included in the program. It could be up to 2 years. Also, if you do not pass the EMT registry by the time you finish your medic program, you will have to do a setback repeatedly till you go through your six attempts at national registry or you have to retake the EMT course. If you need a job asap, suck it up and work at Tim Horton's. Honestly, it's not that bad from what I hear. That makes 80k or more? None. Nursing you'd make about 40 - 60k starting out with overtime. I do know of a firefighter who made 60,000 before overtime in Michigan, but there's a reason why a lot of firefighters are being cut in Michigan. They are paying too much. He also teaches RNs and paramedics.

For nursing or almost any of the allied health professions you will need a year of prerequisites which are not in a Paramedic program. Then there might be a waiting list to get accepted into a nursing program and that is if you get accepted since it is a highly competitive program to get into now.You will then spend 2 more years in college and with no guarantee you will get a job since most employers now want a BSN (Bachelors degree in Nursing). To make in the $80k range in MI you would need to be a Nurse Practitioner which is a Masters and Doctorate degree after the BSN. Many of the Allied health professions also want a Bachelors or higher. The Associates degree for Physical, Occupational and Speeh Therapy only make you an Assistant or entry level where you must work under the supervision of the Therapist. Each of the Therapist programs requires at least a Masters (6 years) degree and PT now wants a Doctorate degree. To be a Physician Assistant, you will need a Bachelors with all of the required courses and an excellent GPA for acceptance into the graduate program. A lot of Respiratory Therapists with Bachelors degrees are applying for positions in the schools since their field is on the chopping block. Many PAsa re a also doing another 1 - 2 years of resideny to specialize in this highly competitive field. To be an Exercise Physiologist you need a Masters degree. An Athletic Trainer can get away with just a Bachelors degree but that is an extremely difficult field to land a well paying job. So you see if you want to make decent money you will have to spend several years in college. An Associates degree is too low of an entry education. Nursing has finally realized this and are working towards raising their entry requirements for each state to the Bachelors. EMT/Paramedic get paid less than the rest because it takes only a year which includes both EMT and Paramedic certs and is a very restictive profession. If you want to make good money you will need to be a Firefighter also and that is a well paying career with excellent benefits. But, you have to want to fight fires and do the more dangerous extrications.

You could study nursing or become a Physician's Assistant. Is becoming a firefighter and working your way up in the fire service something you have thought about? I'm not sure how far you want to go to get a job, but I think it may take awhile to be earning 80k a year. You also might consider sports medicine or physical therapy.

nothing in those fields/with those degrees is going to pay anywhere near 80k - especially as entry level - maybe half that if you are lucky
