How do I make my resume professional?

How do I make my resume look professional if I have multiple positions with gaps in between them?

  • Alright so I'm trying to make a resume but I only typically work during the summers and its affecting the look and professional acceptance of potential employers. How do I format my resume so it still shows my skills and work experiences without outlining the gaps?

  • Answer:

In your cover letter you can explain any volunteer positions or school work that you've done during the gaps. This will show that even though you were unemployed, you were still being productive and doing something.

Is the reason that you work during the summers only because you go to school full time? If so, this is an acceptable excuse. I would recommend that you highlight your education first, especially because you will be a new grad soon and will likely be pursuing employment in a new field as an entry level candidate. Then, list "Summer Employment" as the next section. Briefly list the name of the business, your title, the year you worked there and one or two major accomplishments. Since these jobs probably won't mean much to your first 'real job' a lot of detail is not necessary.
