Is there a minimum amount of hours (per week) you must work if you have a PART-TIME job?
-
If so, what is it? I'd like to start working part time at a local supermarket. I'm a student, nearly 18, in my last year of high school and plan to go to university next year. I know I need to focus on my studies, and I will, but I'd also really like to start saving up at the same time. I thought it wouldn't hurt to do a shift, say, on a Saturday morning, so I'll have Saturday afternoon free. And possibly one day after school. I'm cautious of that though, because I need to study after school. I take 7 academic subjects. Are you expected to work a few days a week or.. how often? So is there a minimum amount of hours you have to work at somewhere like a supermarket per week?

Answer:
Usually part time is considered about 20 hours a week. However, there are a few jobs that don't require as many hours, or even just weekend jobs, so you would have to specify that you didn't want as many hours.

No, it's totally up to your employer. The only thing they'll really probably be concerned about is overtime hours (over 40 hours a week, typically).
The Common Man
Part time jobs mean anywhere between 4-6 hours, or 8 hours a day for 1-2days/week. If you can fit that in, no problem. If you think you cannot, do not risk it.

In any retail job, most likely they would have you work on average of 2 to 4 days a week would be my guess. Since young and in school, you would most likely be working on ALL weekends and maybe a night or 2 after school till 9 or 10 pm. On holidays, like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Labor day, Memorial day, 4th of July, it gets really busy since people entertain more and buy more food. So most likely would be working more hours so that they could cover the customers. In weeks that are slow, they could cut hours. A lot of college students will work in supermarkets during the summer and when home on holidays to make extra money. All that you can do, is apply and find out. Most applications will ask when you are available to work. But if you were to ask for Saturday mornings and only 1 day during the school week, it is unlikely they will call you in for an interview. But if you were to state that you can work weekends plus "either" 1 or 2 nights during the school week, would have a better chance of being hired. good luck

No, there's no minimum number of hours you "must" work. It's completely up to you and your employer. You want to find a position and an employer who just needs you a few hours a week, on the schedule that works for you. Some things to keep in mind: the more training that's required for a position, the more likely there will be a higher number of hours required by the employer, to make it worth his/her while to invest in training you. In a job like a supermarket job, you are likely to be needed more than just one morning or one morning and one evening a week. And whenever other employees call in sick, quit or get fired, you will probably be called upon to work some extra hours because the employer will need you to cover those shifts, even if it's just on occasion. You might consider something less structured, like babysitting or maybe tutoring, if you have the temperament and talents that are compatible with teaching or caring for young children.
