Is a Criminal Justice degree worth it?

  • I'm barley a freshman college student. I have always wanted to pursue a career in the law enforcement. Although to be in a state level law enforcement the minimum education level would be a HS diploma(unless your trying to advance yourself you would need college education). My ambitions are to start working for my local police dept. and hopefully after a couple of year attaining work experience apply for a federal agency(F.B.I/DEA/ICE). Would a bachelor's in CJ be useful though?

    If you want to go Federal, then yes, you will need a degree in something, possibly even an advanced degree. Most FBI agents for example are either lawyers, accountants, or psychologists. A couple of years of work experience will not even come close to putting you ahead of the thousands of other applicants for those positions. Stay in school and get the degree, it will payoff bigtime down the road, even if you don't need it to get a police officer job. Because without a degree, you won't go much further than that.

You must contact the police department you intend to apply for a job at to find out what their requirements are. Your call may also allow your potential employer to become more familiar with you. If you intend to eventually join a federal law enforcement agency such as the FBI, it would be best to contact the agency and speak with an agent to get a practical sense of what kind of preparation you will need. The FBI has high expectations and extensive requirements for applicant-candidates. You can find these specific requirements at the government website, but you will need at least a 4 year degree with additional concentration in a discipline more advanced than CJ or in addition to CJ, such as accounting, information technology or a foreign language. You also need 3 years work experience at minimum.
