What is the Difference between LPN & LVN?

What's the difference between Medical Assistant & LPN/LVN?

  • Answer:

A Medical Assistant is educated and trained to work in the physician's office or clinic setting. They bring patients back to the exam area, get vitals, reason for being seen, assist the practitioner (doctor, PA, or NP), and also do things like give injections, draw blood, get EKGs, etc. They are not trained for working in a setting such as a hospital or nursing home. They generally have about 9-12 months of schooling. An LPN is an entry-level nurse. They can work in physician's offices (with some additional on-the-job training specific to a medical office setting), but are usually found in nursing homes and the general units of hospitals (med/surg). They can assess a patient, give medications, and many other "nursing" skills. It takes about a year to become an LPN/LVN.
