Is my friend's Facebook profile deactivated or deleted?

I can still see his photo and name in the pull down search on facebook and when you try to click on it, it says page not found, also he is not on my friend's list nor on our mutual friend's lists either. I still have the messages he sent me but his name is in black letters and there is no photo. And lastly, all the likes and comments are gone too. So what's up? Did he deactivate it from all of us, meaning his friends too? Or did he delete it for good?
