What is wrong with my skin?

What is wrong with my skin? Premature wrinkles!?

  • Hey guys. I've asked about this a couple times on here already, but I'm gonna try again. My skin seems to be aging prematurely. I'm mostly just talking about my face here. I have deep wrinkles around my mouth (you know, like laugh lines) from smiling. In the morning, they don't look AS bad, but at the end of the day I look terrible because I've been smiling. Other than that, if I make any faces, or even rest my head on my hand, wrinkles will form and stay there for hours. If I push lightly on my skin, i see tons and tons of little wrinkles, like an old person. I'm female, only 20, I drink 2-3 liters of water a day, put vitamin E oil on at LEAST 2 times a day, and have a moderately healthy diet (I am a vegetarian, but I'm sure I could eat more vegetables). I am underweight. I'm 6ft and weigh 130. I'm not sure if that has any effect.. As far as a cleanser goes, I don't use bar soap, instead I use a Burts Bees face wash that has so far been the only one I can use without breaking out. It does leave my face a bit tight/dry afterwards, but i ALWAYS slather my skin in vitamin E right after washing it. So, all that being said, does anyone have ANY idea as to why this is happening to me, and what I can do to fix it? I like to use natural products as much as possible. I am 20 and I look like I'm 30! I am trying to gain weight, but I doubt it will help my wrinkly skin fill out.. maybe though? Someone please help :( I'm really desperate, and can't afford to go to the dermatologist!

  • Answer:

You sound like you have body dimorphic disorder, loads of young people have 'laugh lines' and yeah if you pinch/squish your skin you're going to see wrinkles, skin isn't plastic. If it genuinely is that bad (and you're not just paranoid) then unfortunately you're just unlucky, it's genetic and involves free radical damage (look it up). Being underweight won't have helped though.

You have your answer right there - you are underweight. That is impacting your skin. It's not unusual for people who are underweight to have it impact their skin in this way. You probably aren't getting enough calories each day, you probably aren't getting enough protein and good fats, and that's showing in your skin as well. Your overall nutrition is impacting how your skin looks. This isn't about what you're putting on your skin. It's about what you're putting in your body. If you can adjust your nutrition to give you more calories, more protein, more good fats, plus gain some weight, you should see a measurable difference in how your skin looks. Yes, gaining weight, and eating the right things, will fill out your skin and make it look better! When you are vegetarian, it is especially important that you fully understand your body's nutritional needs, so you can ensure you're getting enough protein and good fats via non-meat products. It's not about eating more veggies, but about eating the right vegetarian foods, in the right combinations, to provide the nutrients your body needs to function well. For example, combining rice and beans to create a "whole protein". I'd like to suggest that you get some really good books on vegetarian nutrition, and adjust your diet so that you're getting the right number of calories, and you're ensuring you're getting the right nutrients as well.
