Are there any take out restaurants in Nice?

What are healthy vegetarian choices at Asian take-out restaurants? Help?

  • Yay, lazy night in! And...we're ordering Chinese take-out, something we NEVER do, but tonight I couldn't care less about cooking. Take-out food is rarely healthful and I need some help, please! What are some healthy vegetarian choices at Asian take-out restaurants? Thanks ahead of time. ;-)

  • Answer:

Whilst there are lots of vegetable and tofu choices, beware that Chinese view "vegetarian" a bit differently to how we do in the west and will often include oyster sauce or fish sauce in the cooking process. So make sure to specifically ask for "no oyster or fish sauce", there are alternatives but you have to specifically ask for them. Bon appetit! Nothing like a lazy night it eating something that you haven't had to cook for yourself. Enjoy!

Are you able to look at their menu? If so.. -Steer clear of anything deep fried – like Sesame Chicken or Sweet and Sour Pork. Many restaurants will make these dishes without deep frying, but then, you have to consider the sauce..try entrees with mustard sauce instead. -Super secret code words on Chinese menus: “Shu” means barbecued. “Kow” means roasted and “Chu” means broiled. Words like braised, steamed, lightly sautéed are code for NOT FRIED. These are good entrees to order. Fried, stir-fried, Deep-fried are less than optimal choices. - Go Veggie. There are lots of straight veggie options on Chinese menus – Kung Pao Tofu, Ma Po Tofu, Steamed Mixed Veggies etc. -Good sides and BAD sides. We all have our good sides, and Chinese food does too. Good sides include vegetables, tofu, steamed veggie buns etc… Bad sides? Those deep fried crunchy noodles are little fat bombs. And Lo Mein noodles… they turn that dark color from soaking up all that oil. A large portion generally runs in the thousands of calories. Order rice or noodles but don’t get both. If you do, you’ll end up feeling semi-comatose due to carb overload. Better to eat more lean protein or veggies.

Steamed rice, soup, tofu with steamed vegetables. There's usually a raw salad type deal. Stir fried bean sprouts and fresh green veg, you can see there's little oil- much better than a sloppy tray of soaked sauce-covered veg. Tea, corn on the cob ( Thai restaurants do this, maybe your CHinese place isn't remotely Chinese and will sell you a fresh green salad).

I look for mixed veggies, some sort of whole grain (usually brown rice, or noodles if I don't care for health) and some sort of protein (tofu or peas or some type of bean) Usually I find something, but I don't have a go to dish. If you gave a menu, then we could make a specific recommendation.

It's fairly easy to get the meat substituted for tofu if you ask for it.
