How do you heal a wound?

How do I heal an open wound that failed to stay glued?

  • My 3 year old fell last week and punctured her forehead. Doctor used surgical glue to close the wound and only told us to not get it wet for 24 hours. The nurse put 2 steri strips overtop to help keep it closed. Over the weekend I had to replace the butterfly stitches twice, and put a 2nd skin overtop. It must've dissolved the rest of the glue because Monday morning she had started minor bleeding again. The next doc said it was too late to stitch or reglue now, let it breathe the rest of the day and then put a bandaid and polysporin on once it dried. Did that, which made it soft with exudate again. Asked a pharmacist what to do: keep it moist with 2nd skin hydrogel under a bandaid, and change it every 2 days or so. Her bandaid got wet today so I had to change it (prevent infection) and it started minor bleeding again. How the hell do I get it to heal?? I've been told both to let it dry out and keep it moist. Everything I do causes it to bleed again, and I'm paranoid about infection. Should I just slap a hydrocolloid patch on it to keep it moist (heal from the bottom), and not worry about the little bit of blood that might leak? Every time I take her to a doctor I get different advice. She's not showing signs of infection and it doesn't bother her, but the longer it takes to heal the more stressed I get about my baby being injured. And I've never dealt with an open wound before.

  • Answer:

This is the story of my life....only mine are located in places that are hard to heal. (Buttocks, Groin, and Inner and Outer Labia) There is a cream called "Silver Sulfadiazine Cream" which is the only thing that works for me...you may want to ask him about it. I keep mine covered with gauze and tape...bandaids are very irritating and they stick to your skin which is most likely causing her re-bleed. ..but since she is only 3 years old, I am sure that will not last long. You can try a Hydrocolloid Patch and see if that works...Open wounds are very difficult to deal with. It just takes time....
