Sea fishing failure, Can't CATCH Fish!?
-
I go sea fishing once or twice a week and for some reason it seems like I am the only person who doesn't catch anything. I have 2 fishing Rods, I usually have one on the bottom and one with a float and change the depth of the stop knot, i use rag worms mackerel and sand eel as bait, I can cast far and have fished in about 20 different places I use average sized hooks and do think I know a little bit about the sport. Need to understand what I am doing wrong!?

I dunno I'm sure. Rod on the bottom? It'll get all wet and gooey and go rusty.I like holding mine. At least the inside of my hand has the wind off it that way. Blows a gale round these parts. First off...where are you? Newcastle, Southampton, Upper-Bigglesway-under- Troutfoot -Bottom, Fishpoo Deeps? Oh...I think that was Fishpool that place and the L got rubbed off Get back and I'll post a local bit but fishing isn't what it was ten years ago. We get nothing like the number of mackerel and herring coming now that we used to get and the days of 10lb pollack from the shore are disappearing fast too. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100816164149AAI6FCG Simple rigs, and if you're on a pier just drop the line over the side if the water is deep enough and try your luck there. Piers attract fish. Get worms well threaded all the way up the hook and leave a wiggly tail on the end but not too much. Mackerel strips are fine, catch anything with those, and sand eels are a luxury and a very good one. We get them off our west coast and take a boat up there at times on a sand eel trip to stock the freezer with them if the weather is OK. Otherwise feathers or kitchen foil strips wrapped round the hook with a tail hanging will get fish around here and with one fish in the bucket we've got fresh bait when we want it. Limpets last ages on a hook even in rough weed. Good stuff. You can eat them too. Ram a sharp thin knife under them double quick so they don't get time to clamp down and they'll fall of the rock. Too slow, you've had it. Try another one. Run the knife round the inside and it all comes out in one. Put the hook through the white fleshy foot. You can drag it back through thick weed and most times it'll still be on the hook. We use them for fishing off the rocks and we get ten foot deep weed at Langness. More, and cooking them http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100403032754AAjs5GL

Hi Please don't get to disheartened we all go through spells of not catching much.As for bait its probably not what you are using its how its presented.I don't know what kind of reel you are using for casting but as a beginner I would suggest a fixed spool (you will cast further without the hassle of tangles),but fishing from the beach I have had my best fish in the surf. Keep trying and tight lines.

I am assuming you are fishing from shore. I don't think your top water setup is going to get you anything. Depending on where you are most fish will hang on the bottom near structure. If you are in a boat use a depthfinder. If you are on the shore I would recomend the following: Use one rod with a carolina rig and some squid. Just about anything out there will eat squid. On the other rod start using a lure heavy enough to get some casting distance. A kastmaster works well What you want to do is methodically explore the area you are fishing with the lure. Get a hit and concentrate your bait fishing on that area. http://www.thefishinggeek.com

Nathan, Do you target a specific species? Do you know when that specific species is in your waters? Many fish that inhabit surf regions of the world are migratory. If you don't know whats in your waters, and when you're setting yourself up for a great deal of frustration. Also not all surf regions are the same. Only certain areas will hold fish at any one given time depending on tide, water temperature, and geological/topographical features (like sand bars, troughs, piers, jetties etc) A little research into your area will help you immensely.

Only thing I can suggest find a lucky local. Watch what kind of setup he uses.
