Gun barrels bought online?
-
(This question refers to gun barrels that do not have the serial numbers marked on them such as many Glocks and others, obviously the ones with serial numbers are a different story altogether. !) I have a question regarding Gun barrels bought online? You see my friend and I were talking about them and a question came up regarding gun forensics, lol. Basically the whole question is are gun barrels that are bought online or even in a gun store for that matter, (whether they are made from the manufacture or 3rd party company ) are those barrels rifling recorded for future use if needed in identifying that weapon at a later time. I said I think they are but I have not proof though. My friend on the other hand thinks they are not based off the fact you are not required to have a background check or anything to buy them since they are considered an accessory and thus no background check is needed (at least in some states). The other point he made was that even if they were, someone could easily obtain one via ordering from a different ip than his home, then ship it to a address no one lives in and then just be there and sign for it when it arrives. Thus there is no point in even recording the rifling in the first place, If a background check was required than they would defiantly being recorded but one is not required so it kinda makes no sense to record it. He made a very convincing argument, lol So Who is right Me or him?

Answer:
You are incorrect, he is correct. There is no database for rifling records. If there were, a 50 cent file from a hardware shop would render every criminal's gun untraceable by such records. You can buy abrasive-coated bullets to help polish the rifling of your barrel to help increase accuracy, so that would change the record as well. In the future, if you are trying to make claims, the burden of proof lies on you to prove that there is in fact a public rifling recording database. If you cannot find it after much intelligent searching, occams razor would suggest that maybe such a database does not exist.

No, there is no national registry of rifling marks. Period. That goes for barrels as well as complete guns. Edit: for a while, in a couple of states, you had to submit a pair of fired cartridges to the state when you registered your gun. That was the extent of "ballistic databasing" that was ever done on a wide scale for new guns. They would not make you re-submit the cases if you re-barreled your gun though.

Firearm barrels are not registered or cataloged in any fashion. There is no magic data base that collects this information. And it would be a waste of time and resources to do so.

Barrel rifling is NOT recorded. Contrary to what some states try to do and what you see on television, you can not take a case or bullet from a gun on file and match it to one recovered at a crime scene. You can however, recover a bullet or case at a crime scene and test a particular gun to see if it matches. A little bit of sanding or parts replacement between the time of the crime and testing of the gun will show no match.

Markings from aftermarket barrels are not recorded anywhere. But then again, neither are rifling markings on the barrels that come with guns. In the real world computers don't work like they do on CSI shows. Millions of firearms are sold each year, any attempt to make a data bank would be a waste of time and money.

What state do you live in. Its sad that its such a big deal it only punishes legal owner's.
