What's the difference between a takedown recurve bow and just a traditional recurve?

Whats the best kind of bow for deer hunting?

  • I want a recurve bow, but everyone i ask says i should get a compound bow. i really don't want a compound bow, but if im not going to be able to bring down a buck with a recurve I'll have no choice

  • Answer:

The recurve bow, in the hands of a skilled hunter that is proficient with it, can kill a deer as quickly and easily as a compound bow will. The deer, if hit in the heart-lung area, with a recurve bow with draw weight of 40 or more pounds, and generating just a little over 150 feet per second will die just as fast as one shot with a compound bow at 70 lbs of draw weight and shooting at 300 plus feet per second. The problem comes in the area of skill. It takes the average person over six months of steady practice to develop the skills needed to shoot the recurve bow,and have the ability to make a clean kill on a deer with it. They are shot instinctively (most people do) and it takes a good while and constant repetition to develop the skills needed. A compound bow, on the other hand can have you deer hunting with a few short practice sessions to become used to it. I have seen a few guys buy a compound, and sight it in one day, and take a deer with it the next day. You will never do that with the recurve. But when you can kill a deer shooting a traditional bow, you are considered the best of the best.

You will need a minimum of 35lbs draw weight with a compound bow, while with a recurve it will be about 50lbs. So clearly it's going to be easier to shoot for you with a compound bow for hunting. Next you have the sights. Compound bows have a better sight selection for hunting. You can get multi-pin sights for different distances fairly easily and cheaper then one for a recurve bow. Dont get me wrong, you can hunt just a well with a recurve bow but it's going to take longer to learn and will be a little harder to shoot. If you're serious about bowhunting then you should get a compound bow.

you can use a recurve, as long as its powerful enough. it should be 55+ lbs i think

A recurve is fine for hunting deer. Most states have a minimum draw weight required to hunt - MA is 40#. Check your state's hunting and fishing rules. As for a recurve, if you're looking to buy, I like the Martin Jaguar or Martin Saber Takedown Recurve Bows. You can get them with enough draw weight for hunting, they breakdown for easy transport and storage, and you can get a kit for the Jaguar for under $200 - with arrows. This site has them as well as educational articles that might be of interest.
