How hard is A-level chemistry?

Scared for Chemistry ALevel?

  • All these Sixth formers who do it came into our class today and said how they got A stars at gcse but now they average a C at alevel! Is it really too hard?

  • Answer:

Chemistry A level, like all A levels, is more demanding than GCSE level. The no of periods per week goes up and you cover much more ground. Unless you keep on top of what you are being taught and do the necessary background reading from the text book and homework, then grades will drop. This doesn't just happen in chemistry! Some people who have got good GCSEs find the extra demands a shock and their grades drop.. I have also had students whose grades have improved when they were able to discard other subjects to concentrate on their A levels. If you enjoy chemistry and select it as an A level, the practicals can be fun, the course and work can be worthwhile rewarding and it is an essential requirement for a number of interesting careers. If you are having worries about proceeding to A level Chem you should talk to your teacher. He/she should be able to advise you on your suitability.
