Is the Midwestern American English accent unique?

How come I speak in a British/english accent, but I am a American!?

  • So I was born in the western part of Massachusetts, so there is no boston accent at play there. just plainness? Anyways, ever since I was a little girl I spoke differently. For some reason people always said I either had a Boston accent or a British accent. I couldn't understand why. I was weird with how r's i suppose but that was really it. I am currently in 8th grade, but starting sometime in 5th or 6th grade my accent just became completely British. It was a gradual change, but i really do sound British now. I know there are all different kinds of British accents and i'm not even sure which one i have, or if it is one. But i have recorded myself and listened , IT SOUNDS LIKE I AM BRITISH. Naturally I am very curious about this, I am a fourth generation American and I don't even have British anncestors. My accent is more close to english, but i hear some Scottishness in it too. BUT WHY? It makes no sense. It's true that I am obsessed with many british show's now and band's but that was after my whole realization......So i am just wondering, why do you think this happened to me? I've always always always talked this way so it's not like i smacked my head or anything. Help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. (EVERYONE asks where I came from, and I'm like here. and then their heads explode)

Maybe you find that pronouncing words in a different accent a lot easier. And especially with british shows and bands this accent would have gotten more defined than it was when you were younger. There is nothing wrong with this at all. Do you have any friends or a teacher who do have these accents? Chances are you must of picked up on it, it is a common occurance to have someone going overseas to a different country and come back with an accent of a slight. I am in the same situation, I get told I have either an American or English accent (or an accent that they could not label). I have an American uncle which explains the Amercian accent but I discover if I listen to foreign music or TV shows I will pick up on the style of the pronounction that is being said. It does get annoying and somewhat fustrating that I had to repeat phrases and sentences because of my accent but on the positive side at least I don't sound like everybody else.
