How Can i prepare For a job in the Video game Industry?

What can I do to prepare for a job in the video game industry?

  • I'm currently a high school student who is interested in having a job in video game programming or video game design. What can I do to prepare for one of those jobs. Keep in mind that I'm a high school student and only have about 1-2 hours a night of free time.

  • Answer:

Game design is a very very broad category, which can include art, programming, or systems design. People that land those jobs come from a variety of backgrounds (ie: artists, programmers, testers, and writers). That's why you're getting answers all around the place. If you're specifically interested in programming. Look into learning LUA, which is used in making mods and addons for several games, including World of Warcraft. You could also look into Unreal Engine for designing your own levels and mods. Level design typically involves a degree in art, and quest design typically involves a creative writing degree. They both involve a bit of programming experience, but they are not programmers by any means. Research the roles a bit more and decide what career path you want to take, then people will be able to give you more accurate advice. I actually have the same interest as you and from the information i found out was that computer animation (if your high school offers the class) is a good course of action to take on preparing for a job in the video game industry. you might also want to take some art classes if you aren't good at drawing or want to get better. as for video game progamming i don't know any high school classes on that but you can try robotics they work with programming software and should give at least an early start. hope this helps at least a little
