What is 'Enter Achilles' about?

What is the difference here between "Strive to enter in" and "seek to enter in"?

  • "STRIVE TO ENTER in at the narrow gate. For I say to you, many will SEEK TO ENTER in and shall not be able. And once the Master of the house has risen up and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us, and He shall answer and say to you, I do not know you; from where are you; then you shall begin to say, We ate and drank in Your presence, and You have taught in our streets. But He shall say, I tell you, I do not know you; from where you are. Depart from Me, all workers of unrighteousness!" (Luke 13:24-27 MKJV) For the sake of all desiring to obey God, here is the greek word which Jesus used for "strive": ἀγωνίζομαι agōnizomai Thayer Definition: 1) to enter a contest: contend in the gymnastic games 2) to contend with adversaries, fight 3) metaphorically to contend, struggle, with difficulties and dangers 4) to endeavour with strenuous zeal, strive: to obtain something Bonus Q: Which of these best fits what the Master was describing as the way to enter in the narrow Gate ? ( Perhaps it is speaking of all the above? : ) Interstingly, we see that the Apostle Jude uses this word, "agōnizomai", but in this case it is combined with "Epi" to make "epagōnizomai", and is seen in english as "to contend earnestly for" Having made all haste to write to you about the common salvation, beloved, I had need to write to you to exhort you to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints. For certain men stole in, those of old having been written before to this judgment, ungodly ones perverting the grace of our God into unbridled lust, and denying the only Master, God, even our Lord Jesus Christ. (Jude 1:3-4 LITV) Bonus Q: Is there a very real connection between striving to enter in through the narrow Gate, and earnestly contending for THE FAITH which was once delivered unto the saints? For that to be true, "the narrow (strait) Gate" would also have to represent "The Faith once delivered unto the saints", right? By whom also we have ACCESS BY FAITH into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: (Romans 5:2-4 KJV) According to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: In whom we have boldness and ACCESS with confidence BY THE FAITH of HIM.!" (Ephesians 3:11-12) Thank you, beloved answerers, for considering this question and for sharing the affirmation that you indeed are "striving to enter in" and are "earnestly contending the The Faith once delivered unto the saints!" : ) Much love to YOU and to all! : )

Hi there Seth As I read your very interesting question, and while I stoked my chin, one character of the bible popped into my head - Judas, followed swiftly by Paul on your bonus question. His name is spelt in the ancient hebrew letters in a very similar way to the name of Jesus and Jehovah. In basic (almost native american )language, you could say Judas' name is 'I am the Door' and we all know who also gives himself that title. His role is to be able to detach himself from the old way of being - he gives up his life so Jesus can enter the next phase, as it were. A misunderstood character indeed. Paul says in 2 timothy 4, 'I have fought the good fight' using the same greek word, agonizomai. This has the faith issue written all over it if its coming out of Paul's mouth, so I would go for number 4 as the most fitting description. And yet, he also talks about winning the race, which implies the first option, too. Hmmm... The greek word for 'saints' is hagiois and refers to ALL believers in Jesus Christ. Here is another key: 'IN Jesus Christ'. When we believe, we must be believing from the point of view of Jesus Christ - I can not think or believe or feel mydesire is fulfilled from any other place and expect it to be granted, since it is by him all things are made (John 1) If you look for an external JC to make your dreams, wishes and prayers come true, you will not be successful. Why?? because the identity of Jesus Christ is the human imagination; the only place where God is buried - in Golgotha, the skull. I am putting a link below that is guaranteed to both attract and repel. But I have no doubt, Seth, that you will have at least some your questions answered there. I know I haven't thoroughly answered all your questions but perhaps the link will explain enough. all the best e.g.

e.g.

The kingdom of heaven is within you (luke 17:21). Those who think that heaven is out there somewhere, or here or there or in the sky are following the wide path. The path is so narrow that it will only fit one soul at a time, and it is only possible to find it by going within yourself. There you will find a great counselor and comforter and you will KNOW peace and all power of heaven and earth is at your disposal. So sayeth Jesus and so I have found to be true.
