How does a prayer go like in a mosque?

Muslim prayer at the mosque?

  • I have to visit a mosque and attend a prayer session, sorry im not sure exactly what is called. Anyways I understand that there is the 5 prayers a day, and then the main prayer on Fridays. Can someone please explain to me the difference from the Friday prayer from the other ones. Also in each kind, what do they do? I know Muslims pray towards Mecca, but is the Quran read? Does one person recite a prayer? Does everyone pray out loud together? I just want to know what actually goes on, and how long does it last about. I'm just trying to learn a little bit before I go. This is for a class im taking by the way. Thank you so much. I appreciate the help

    Firstly, before praying or reading the Quran or even touching the Quran, we do Wudu (abluation). I gave a link, you can look how to do step by step Wudu. Friday is actually the big day. We go to the Mosque and there is a sermon then we pray how we pray everyday. Before the prayer a Mua'zin (a person who calls the Azan (call to prayer)) calls the Azan and then we pray like 15 mins. after that. A person leads the prayer and he is called the Imam. When we pray we read Surah Fatiha (the opening of the Quran) Then we can read any Surah or 3 verses +. We just whisper behind the Imam and even when we aren't praying behind the Imam, we whisper, we don't read it out loud. The only verse we sat out loud behind the Imam is "Ameen." The prayer is called salah, and is led by an imam. Depending on the community, the person that is the imam could range from being a scholar to just someone chosen to lead the prayer. The prayer is completely in Arabic. 5 obligatory prayers: Fajr (dawn) Dhuhr (afternoon) Asr (evening) Maghrib (after sunset) Isha (night) On Friday, known as Jum'uah, the Dhuhr prayer is replaced by a sermon and the Jum'uah prayer. Each prayer is composed of a number of units. Fajr is 2 units Dhuhr is 4 units Asr is 4 units Maghrib is 3 units Isha is 4 units Jumu'ah is 2 units Each unit is a sequence of- Standing Bowing Standing again Prostrating Sitting Prostrating Sitting (in the second and last units) In the first standing part of each unit, the first sura (chapter) of the Qur'an, Al-Fatihah, is recited. In the first two units of each prayer, the imam recites out loud (except in Dhuhr and Asr), and additional verses are recited after Al-Fatihah. The recital in the remaining units is silent. In the other parts of the prayer, we recite different things to praise God. For example, when prostrating, we say in Arabic, "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High" If you are attending the Friday prayer, the sermon could be around half and hour. It may be in Arabic only, or Arabic and the local language. The prayer itself could be 5-10 min, depending on what is recited. At the start of the time for prayer, the adhan (call to prayer) is called. Immediately before the prayer begins, the iqama is called. Friday prayers consists of a lecture whereas daily 5 time prayers donot have lecture. Quran is recited in all the prayers. Prayers are in arabic language. Lecture can be in local language. Prayers in congregation are led by an Imam who recites Quran,bow down and prostrate.all muslims have to follow exactly his movements. No everyone listens to Quran recited by Imam silently. Only Aameen is said loudly after imam recites surah fatiha.(first chapter of Quran) Friday prayer last about 30-45minutes.
