Im Writing a Research paper about Abuse on Women, But i have to incorporate the book Their Eyes Were Watching God. Here's my Approach: Approach: In the book Their Eyes are Watching God, Janie goes through an abusive relationship with her husband. She was abused privately and publicly. This caught my eye and I immediately thought “how could he beat her publicly and no one says anything?” I also want to compare the Abuse in woman in the 1930's to now.

The problem with emotional "abuse" claims are they let the victim off the hook in terms of their personal responsibility to get out of such a relationship. Unless the "victim" is locked in a cage and cannot leave, the front door is always there for all such victims to simply "leave" rather than making up excuses to stay but then wanting some sort of recompense or retribution via the legal system after-the-fact. If someone constantly belittles, embarrasses, manipulates and or controls you, et al, why the heck would you stay with them? It makes no sense. Physical abuse, on the other hand, should also be a one-time event (if you get hit for reasons other than someone defending themselves from you) but at least in such a case it's reasonable you didn't see it coming and once the threat was evident (and the attacker is clearly physically superior) you did the right thing and got out. The claim of "nowhere else to go" is a crock because battered spouse shelters are everywhere. Claims of appearances and what the neighbors might think are baseless claims into vanity. Where's the responsibility for choosing the wrong person in all of this as well? Everyone wants a free do-over where their mistakes are erased but the abuse of the other remains. Obviously an abusive spouse should be detached from, but claiming that the other spouse's poor choices in life are ignored. Additionally so-called emotional "abuse" is easy to turn into a political tool. With physical abuse it's fairly clear - either you were beat up or you weren't - with the ramifications of wrong-doing on behalf of the attacker being clear in terms of assault and battery, etc. Emotional "abuse" however can be claimed on virtually anything someone with an agenda would care to weave it into, and therefore it can be dangerous ground to tread for someone seeking objective truth vs. a subjective claim.
