If I get my boating license for IN do I have to get it for KY and TN too if that's where I'll drive.?

I'm getting my boating license and If get it for Indiana will I have to get one for KY and TN too. I'm doing it online. Will I have to take it for all three states or just IN.? (I live in IN.)

Answer:
Get it for the state in which you live and the boat is registered (IN). So long as it is from an accredited source (like boat-ed.com or any other course that is NASBLA accredited), this will serve as your license that you'll carry whenever driving your boat, no matter where you are travelling. If the boat is to be in a given state (in the water) for more than 3 months, it may constitute residency and you'll have to check with that state's DNR. Assuming you will be vacationing or doing weekend trips to KY and TN, you'll be fine with your IN license. Similarly, you won't have to put different registration numbers on your boat when on neighboring state's waters. Regarding answer below, the Department of Transportation has nothing to do with boating licenses or boat registration. The Department of Motor Vehicles would deal with registering your trailer. Dept of Transportation is concerned with roads and maintenance, among other things!

Shania, to be safe check out the requirements of the three states you mention. This link will take you to a page that has a listing for each state: http://www.americasboatingcourse.com/abc_website/state_boating_law.htm If you cannot find the answer on the site use the "Contact Us" link on each and ask. Chances are that if you have passed the course in one state the other two will recognize the certificate as being valid in theirs as well. That's the way it is here in VA as MD and DC recognize the one issued to me by the Power Squadron. The same would hold true if we were to take our vessel down the ICW for a vacation in FL. Remember, this is not a license to operate the vessel but instead proof that you have passed a boating safety course. There is a major difference of being "licensed" and having "passed" a safety course.
Boatin' in VA!
Maybe, you can ask help from the Department of Transportation. Go to their website and then you can email them or what. You can also ask those Marine or Boat experts. They can give you some answers on how and when to get your license so that you can drive anywhere with your boat. Good luck!
