Why does refund get delayed?

I'm just curious how long does it take to actually get your tax refund after being delayed for processing?

• I have received a letter saying that it will take 60 days for them finish my review process. Well their time is up, and still no response. They didn't request any more information from me, nor does their reps are able to tell me anything. All I hear from them is, sorry your account has not been updated, please call again on such and such day a week later from the date I called. I would just like to know how long it took for someone that went thru this? Thanks in advance.

  All bets are off for 2012. So many tax returns were kicked out for review that even though the W-2s have pretty much posted, the IRS hasn't had a change to compare them yet. If your tax return was fairly simple, you, same address, same filing status, address, income, no deductions, no credits, just withholding, the problem is getting to the front of the queue. if your return has EIC, AOC and no 1098-T from the school or includes a schedule C and EIC, it could be months.
