Why does hair fall out so easily and often?

Can your hair fall out from washing it too often?

  • My mum says that ever since I started washing my hair every other day (about 5 months ago) its been falling out... I used to wash it like every 3 days sometimes...Anyway, I also notice this and my hair looks kind of thinner and my hair is already thin as it is! :/ Could that be because I'm washing it every other day? Oh, and I also swim a lot (like once a week but I wash my hair after) so could that contribute to the problem? I really don't want my hair to fall out but I don't want to not wash it otherwise it'd be greacy..........

    Not unless you're washing it with a rock or brillo pad or your shampoo is somehow corrosive. It could be many things. Stress, diet change...consult your doctor if it starts coming out in clumps. For now, just monitor it and don't get too paranoid.

your mum is making stuff up. washing your hair every other day is healthy and recommended for people who have greasy hair. hair also falls out completely naturally. its just like skin cells replacing themselves, hair can't live forever. make sure to use a brush not a comb to help catch it all instead of leaving it all over the floor. if you notice balding patches, then you have cause for concern. but hair shedding is perfectly natural. you probably think it looks thinner because the idea of hair loss is in your mind. i thought i was losing too much hair a few years back but it was nothing, just my noticing how much hair came out on the brush.
