What should i fill his tank with? By the way he is a red eared slider. about the size of a quater. his name is "Murtel the super swimming turtle" Yus that is his real full name ;) thank you for all your help.

  • Answer:

hi i have a red eared slider turtle i adopted from the animal shelter; he is a male getting quite large...I feed my Turtle; "canned baby clams; canned shimp (one shrimp at a time) and or bits of canned tuna; pellets; I also add greens; as they get older they eat more greens...the number one thing I wanted to say to you is this: TURTLES LIKE SHALLOW WATER...Turtles do not like a full tank of water; yeah Turtles are great swimmers; but they do not breathe underwater like a frog or tadpole can Summary: make sure the water is shallow; turtles love to crawl around too and don't pick him up alot; they do not like very cold water either; so add some lukewarm water to the water AND ABOVE ALL if you heat the water DO NOT make the water too warm; red sliders live through winters

Mind you Red Ear Sliders can get huge, if find out that you have a female. I'm not exactly sure what's in a starter kit, but the turtle will last 4 days. A healthy turtle will eat and bask like any other turtle, turtles that don't eat is a sign that it's sick. Also white stuff on their shell could be anything from shell rot to fungus or simple mineral deposits. Baby RES are need more of a protein diet and as they grow older you give them mainly a veggie diet. As far as food goes check this - http://redearslider.com/index_nutrition.html It's preferred to not fill the tank with substrate of any kind, especially gravel because if they are small enough to fit into their mouth's, they will eat it. It could cause a Intestinal Prolaspe, and these are certainly not fun because if you can't get it back in on it's own you'll need to take the turtle to the vet. Vet care is also very expensive, so is care for the turtle. You can add plants, these will be listed in the link I provided.
