My laptop does not recognize alt codes?

Although I currently use an external keyboard, my laptop has a numeric pad of its own. But when I type in an alt code, the only thing that appears is a square. This would mean that it doesn't recognize any alt codes, can someone please tell me how to fix this? Do I have to add a hardware/software, do I have to go to Control Panel and do something, or what? Thanks!~
