What format does a downloaded movie have to be in if your playing it on your DVD from a USB stick or hard driv?

ive downloaded a few movies from Utorrent and none of them work on my DVD player, my dvd player has a usb port so i put the movie on my hardrive and plugged it into the dvd player, i click on the movie i want to watch but it doesn't play..what format does it have to be in to play on the player? none will play on my laptop either, my friends download from the same place and they never have this problem. please help!
