What is the purpose of a OCTAL BUFFER in a keypad and seven segment display circuit?

  • Basically the purpose of the circuit is so that a user presses a number on a key pad which then is dispalyed on a seven segment display. The main components of the circuit are: A PIC A seven segment display A flip-flop/ 8bit register chip A Kepad An octal buffer chip What is confusing me is the purpose of the OCTAL buffer, i can't find any info on the purpose anywhere. The key pad has coloums and rows but on the coloums output of the keypad there is an octal buffer which outputs to the PIC. Why cant the keypad output straight to the PIC? I can't see the purpose of the OCTAL BUFFER. Any help greatly appreciated!

  • Answer:

It debounces the keypad, probably. If you put a scope on it you'd see a hundred or thousand keypresses, which confuses the PIC. Out of the buffer (it might be clocked) you just get one nice clean one.
