What is the entire process of getting a Driver's License in California?

Can someone explain the process to getting a California Motorcycle license (M1)?

  • Please do not just link me to the DMV website, I would like to know the entire process of getting your motorcycle license as someone who is older than 18 but not 21. I understand that I must first pass my written test, then I can use my California Highway Patrol class certificate to waive my riding test. However, do I need to hold my learners permit for 6 months before I can receive my full license? Also, do I need to have passed my California Highway Patrol class before taking my written test? Or does that come after? Just a short step by step process would be awesome! Thank you!

  • Answer:

Do you already have your cage license? If so, you take the CMSP class, get the certificate in the mail. Take it to the DMV with the certificate, pay money, pass written test, pass eye test, walk out of the DMV with your endorsement. No "permit", no waiting, one trip to the DMV and your new Class C M1 license will arrive in the mail in a few weeks.
