How to wean kittens properly?

  • My cat had 4 kittens and they are almost ready to start weaning. How do I do it properly? My friend had a litter of kittens a couple of months ago and said she had lots of trouble trying to wean them. Should I start of with kitten milk? What do I do if they don't seem interested?

    N, you really shouldn't, it's kind of pointless. This milk is for orphaned kittens who don't have a mom to take care of them. You really don't have to rush it or do anything, the mom will start getting annoyed when they start biting her harder and her milk will become insufficient. Just leave dry cat food at two or three places so they can eat it if they want (their mom is giving them an example, they'll know what to do) and give them some tasty wet food when you can, but just a little, that will trick them. How old are they? Just don't separate them from the mom until they're at least three months old. Good luck! :)

Mom cat really weans them and they should not be taken from mom till 10-12 weeks old. But you can start them on canned kitten food (high quality in chicken or lamb only - no fish), KMR, and warm water at around 4-6 weeks old. If they don't seem interested, then wait a week and try again. You may need to gently push a bit of soupy canned food into their mouths or let them lick it off your fingers. Offer this mixture 3-4 times a day till they are ready to leave home. Dry food can be left down to nibble on after 7-8 weeks old - to NOT wet down dry; it can spoil quickly.

i would wait until they are 8 weeks old......then get some powdered milk. add in bowl powdered milk and water to every 4 oz of water....1 tlb spoon of milk. make the water warm, like mothers milk.....and place down with kittens...they will get thristy and will drink at that age. give it to them for about 2 weeks and then water. jean
