My Palm's battery life is horrible?

Laptop battery life help!?

  • I have a Toshiba Protege R705 that I got in January 2011 and the battery life is supposed to be 7-8 hours, obviously thats wrong and when its used normally it goes down to 4 or 5 hours. Recently I have been using my laptop a lot to play movies at night until I fall asleep and it stays on all night, so I did not kill the battery or overcharge the battery by having it plugged in all night I would take out the battery and just have it plugged in. Is that the right thing to do? Also, after classes as soon as I got back to my room I immediately plugged it in to charge up to 100% so I could take out the battery ASAP and just have it plugged in to not use the battery too much. Is it bad that I did that even if my battery was pretty full at the time and had 70% left? Today I noticed after unplugging it when it was done being fully charged when I went out it said my battery life was only 3 hours and 11 minutes!! It has never said that before, and that is SUPER low! I noticed earlier this week that the battery seemed to be dying quickly so I tried to calibrate the battery yesterday by 1. Charge battery to 100% 2. Let battery sit for 2 hours to cool down 3. Put battery back into computer and let it die and not go to hibernate but shut all the way down 4. Take out battery for 5 hours 5. Put battery back in and charge up to 100% But I dont think those battery calibration steps I found online did anything to help. Whats wrong? What did I do? I have warranty on my computer for another 2 years, should I bring it in and see what they say? Would they give me a new battery? The reason I got this computer was for the long battery life because I have a lot of 3 hour classes. Now that at 100% battery it says 3 hours and 11 minutes is how long it will last I am freaking out!

  • Answer:

You have creating a "memory" in the battery by charging it repeatedly when only half discharged. The battery will only charge up to the level that it started at. It may be too late to save your battery completely, but to avoid further degradation of its performance, you must completely drain the battery and then fully charge it, every time you use the laptop. Don't disconnect the charger until it is complete. I doubt warranty will cover the battery.

Batteries slowly lose their maximum charge over time. It's subtle at first but becomes increasingly noticeable as the battery ages. The only real solution is to buy a new battery. - Dominic

Turning it on and off supposedly ruins the battery. I think the companies all lie, mine is supposed to last 5 hours but I'm to get 2 hours on the damn thing.

the manufacturers trick you... they say "It will last between 7-8 hours!" what they don't tell you is that you have to have your "LAPTOP SCREEN" as dim as possible and change the "BATTERY SETTINGS" to either "BALANCED" or "POWER SAVER". I have mine set t "HIGH PERFORMANCE" Since I keep it plugged in when I use it. To change the battery settings and brightness go to "CONTROL PANEL> POWER OPTIONS. Hope that helps!
