System Restore/BIOS Flash?
-
I have a Dell Studio Laptop. Last Sunday I tried to boot my computer on battery power after shutting it down while using the AC adapter only an hour before with everything working smoothly. However, when I tried to boot on battery power only I got a black screen that said that I could either launch normally or launch system to fix (not exactly the words but along those lines) which was recommended. I did that and went through to do system restore. It did not work the first time so it recommended that I try it again which I did and it was successful. My system worked well all week while using the power cable, however, I tried to use it Friday without the power cable and encountered the same issue. I did system restore and was able to get the system up and running again. However, when I hit F12 to try to do diagnostics nothing happened. I tried this several times to no avail. In fact, this put the computer into a state of limbo where nothing was happening, hence I powered the computer off manually. What would cause this issue? I was not very good about cleaning up my temporary files and Internet history or running my Ad Aware. (I have MacAffee but it is set to run itself). I just got off the phone with Dell. They took remote access of my computer and flashed the BIOS and had me boot using only battery power which worked. At this point in time everything appears to be okay, however, I am just wondering what caused this issue and what can I do to prevent it in the future?

Answer:
Windows may have updated something that didn't mesh well with the current settings on the BIOS. The BIOS - in essence - just tells your computer how to boot up - what hardware to look at first, next, and so on. If there was an automatic update done it could have effected it somehow. Updating the BIOS driver (flashing the BIOS) fixed the problem.
