Henna powder for hair?

• So, i recently purchased some green henna powder. Can someone please tell me the effects it will have on my hair? I have never dyed by hair before, and my hair's naturally dark brown. Also, does henna only come in a green powder? If not, what's the difference?

  It will add the rusty orange-red lawsone molecule to your hair, forming a permanent chemical bond with the keratin. Henna's dye has a few unique qualities. It's highly reflective, but it's also translucent. So your natural color will show through, but light will refract more off your hair. So on brown hair, shiny auburn hair will be the result. Dark brown hair won't see a lot of color change indoors, but in direct sunlight you'll see lots of red shine. Expect more of a deep rich mahogany than a bright red, henna will not lighten your hair at all. And yes, henna leaves are a somewhat dull khaki green, thus when you dry and mill the leaves, they stay that color ;) If your henna powder is tan rather than brownish-green, it's old and stale and won't stain well. If it's grass green or neon green, it's likely the seller has added green pigment to the powder to hide staleness, which is somewhat common with cheaper hennas. It won't affect the stain and shouldn't harm you, but it is a sign of a potentially weak, poor staining henna powder. I see this alot in cheap Indian henna.
